This brooch is an invitation for others to ‘poke’ the wearer. This comes from a series of brooches functioning as ‘prosthetics’ for people who have difficulty touching or being touched. Like a hearing aid would help someone with a hearing disability, these brooches aid those with difficulty experiencing physical communication.

Ocular Obstruction.
Copper sheet. Silver tubing. Brass tubing. Nickel wire. Nu-gold wire. Mirrors. Liver of sulfur patina.

Each person has the ability to move the mirrors within the device. They can choose to see the reflection of their own eye, or move their mirror to see the individual on the other side. To see each other, both individuals must cooperate.

A playful piece where someone talks/blows into the speaking end, and the pinwheel on the receiver’s side reacts.

When either individual closes their mouth, the opposing individual’s mouth is forced open. This provides a balance of communication between the two wearers. One may speak while the other listens.
